Dr. Phillip van der Merwe
Dr. Phillip van der Merwe is running to be a community voice for Calgary-Lougheed. He is a Calgary community-based family physician who has called Calgary home for over 20 years.
Phillip is running because here in Calgary-Lougheed we deserve an MLA that will put us first. Alberta’s NDP government has made important investments here, including two new schools in our community: Marshall Springs middle school and Evergreen elementary school. Phillip will fight to ensure that projects that are important to our city and community get built.
For the last 10 years, Phillip has dedicated his life to health care reform, with a focus on improving our primary health care system. He was a founder of the Calgary West Central Primary Care Network – the largest PCN in Alberta, numbering 500 physicians. Phillip led the design and ratification of a new formal Governance Framework for PCNs this summer. He believes this NDP government has been the first to listen to the non-partisan experts and the evidence and has taken the risk of investing in long-term planning which will ultimately bring about the legacy of a healthier Alberta, for all Albertans.
Phillip is originally from South Africa, and lives with his husband in Calgary. He has served on multiple boards and committees, including for the College of Physicians & Surgeons and the Alberta Medical Association. He also sits on the Minister’s PCN Panel, offering his expert advice on Primary Care Networks and how healthcare can be made better for all Albertans.
